It makes no sense to me to send a young person to college in order that he might have stronger earning power throughout his working life, only to have him emerge with a slave's load of debt. So in general my advice about taking loans for college is, "Don't!"  However, my daughter's experience last semester has pointed out one exeception I'd be willing to recommend. Some of my daughter's financial aid award came in the form of work-study.  She would need to work all semester in order to earn the full amount, which was payable as she worked. Here's the rub: tuition and fees deadlines hit well before the end of the semester.  If she paid late, she'd also owe hefty late fees, not to mention that she couldn't register for the next semester classes until the full tuition was paid. So she accepted a federal, no-payment-no-interest until graduation loan in the amount we expected she'd be able to earn during the semester.  The idea is that she would pay off the loan as she worked instead of directly paying the school. Folks at my Idaho Countdown workshop wanted more information about federal financial aid than we had time to discuss.  So here is  a more detailed look at what's out there from Uncle Sam. First, you should know that many private schools won't accept federal funds of any kind, including grants and loans awarded to students.  Their reasoning is that with federal funds comes federal regulation of school policies and curriculum.  Their fears are increasingly likely to be realized as the Obama administration begins to tie college funding to service in federally-run community service organizations like AmeriCorps - a move that will also negatively impact private charity as true volunteers are replaced by paid government workers on the AmeriCorps payroll.  So as you put together your college funding basket, be sure to check with the colleges you want to attend to see whether they accept federal funds. Federal funds can include both grants (gift money which does not have to be repaid) and loans (which do have to be repaid).  Most of these are need-based options. The jury is still out on how well received  creatively structured college degrees will be in the future business climate. Many homeschoolers opt to have their students work on some kind of online or distance degree program while they are still in high school or as an alternative to college after graduation.  While it is smart to use those later high school years to give your student a leg up to a college degree or even to rack up professional certifications in the fields that interest them, taking a degree totally online is still a risk from the perspective of validating achievement to a prospective employer or customer. According to Dawn Boyer, director of marketing, sales and public relations for government contracts and human resources director for MonsterClean Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning,  the keys to business acceptance of an online degree are: 1) Are the exams given in a proctored setting or totally online without standards? "if the degree is high level and testing is done at proctoring centers or within a cooperative (nearby) universities, where the students must report to a controlled testing room or site, then the college/university degree is valid and there should be no question to it's credentials." ...

‘Tis the season. To graduate or not to graduate, that is the question.  Rites of passage are especially important for us homeschoolers who don't have (or want) the usual institutional milestones.  Our children need a time and place they can point to and say, "I finished high school." And having a diploma - even one issued by Your Homeschool Academy - does help them along in business and college.  You don't have to spend the first ten minutes of your post-graduate interviews explaining why you don't have a diploma and how you never graduated from high school.  A diploma validates academic achievement and allows you to proceed directly to discussing your skills, your goals and your value to your interviewer. Two of my three have graduated.  We tailored their celebrations to their tastes and accomplishments. Here are some of the things we did: We got together with our grad's friends for a small joint celebration.
